Apart from the obvious suggestions that have been in the news, i.e. turning down the flow temparature of the boiler, using thermstatic radiator valves etc, the best way of saving money on your heating, is heating fewer rooms. A lot of people now work from home. With that, they need to heat their house. But why heat the whole house? Why not just heat the room(s) that you're using?
How do you do this, you may ask? The answer is Smart Thermostatic Radiator Valves. These beauties work with a smart controller, like a Nest, Hive, or my favorite, a Drayton Wiser Smart control. Instead of setting the temperature of the house, you set the schedule and temperature per room. You could just heat your office, or lounge and then later in the day, switch off the office, and heat the living room. At night, heat the bedrooms just before bedtime, while switching off the lounge/ living areas.
The only downside to these are that the Smart TRV's are pretty expensive, around £40-£50 each, plus the cost of the Smart Thermostat, and the installation costs. For a three bedroom house, lounge, dining room and kitchen, the cost would be about £500. You don't need to buy all the Smart TRV's at once. You can buy a kit with two thermostats and go from there. Smart plugs are also incredibly useful, as you can control things on standby, like your TV, saving more money.
Although the outlay is pretty high to start, ongoing, you'll be using less energy, which is not only good for your pocket, but also for the environment.
